Mpumalanga Department of Public Works Roads & Transport

MSW was appointed in 2010 by the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works Roads & Transport to provide professional services in planning, design and supervision for Maziya Combined School in Hendrina. This was part of 2010/2011 education projects in eradication of mud schools programme.

The scope of the project was demolition of 14 asbestos classrooms and construction of 14 classrooms. Asbestos materials are currently considered a health hazard and only registered persons could supervise the demolitions. There was no enough space in the school compound to build the new classrooms before demolishing the old ones. The project was therefore implemented two phases of six and eight classrooms respectively.

The project was completed within programme and budget on the 21st September 2011. Although the budget was tight, we managed to provide a few extras like a roll-up door between two classrooms so that they can be used as a school hall when required. Ceramic floor tiles were also provided in place of the specified vinyl tiles.

MSW undertook civil/structural designs as well as the principal agent role. Our principal agents have a broad background in the construction industry and understand the importance of balancing the objectives of time, cost and quality. They are also able to draw on the full strength of MSW’s multi-disciplinary expertise to provide independent advice and support when dealing with specialist issues.
