Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA)
MSW were appointed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) in 2009 as engineering consultants for township infrastructure upgrades in Ivory Park, Johannesburg. The JRA are the statutory entity under the City of Johannesburg tasked with the implementation of new road and storm water projects as well as rehabilitation and maintenance of existing infrastructure.
MSW were initially required to study all roads requiring upgrade from gravel to surfaced standard and advise on budget expenditures released in batches to undertake their construction as well as the associated storm water drainage in a prioritized manner in liaison with the community through the Ivory Park Ward Councilors. The main objective was to derive a master plan for two wards that would provide a bulk storm water network to alleviate drainage problems that would enable gravel road conversions to surfaced standard.
The final construction scope from a total of 8km investigated and conceptualized included approximately 4km of road upgrade with new pavement structures and a similar length of associated storm water infrastructure that has enabled future connections during further network upgrades currently underway.
MSW undertook the full design and construction supervision that involved the promotion of local SMMEs and participation of community labour in the delivery of the project.
