Emalahleni Local Municipality
In 2007 Emalahleni Local Municipality engaged MSW to carry out investigations and designs for the new sewage treatment works to replace the old and under capacity treatment works. The project is located in Thubelihle, a township within Emalahleni Municipality that is in Nkangala District Municipality, Mpumalanga.
The project’s main objective was to create a consolidated and sustainable sanitation system that can meet the longer term development objectives for the area. The raw wastewater contains nutrients (which have got high demand for oxygen), pathogens, and obnoxious smell. The installation of this plant will enable effective removal of these pathogens and nutrients contained in the sewage. The fully treated effluent is environmentally friendly, hence its discharge to the natural streams without causing any harm or pollution.
MSW’s role as a Design Engineer and Project Manager was to design the activated sludge treatment plant and project manage the initiation, design development, construction and commissioning of the treatment works. The constant communication between MSW and the municipality ensured that the client’s objectives and goals were achieved. Water and Environmental affairs were a priority and all the designs and installations were made to meet the standards and legal requirements. MSW was also responsible for ascertaining that the facility was properly managed and handed over.
